Yenişehir Kapı

It is one of the gates built of cut stone in the Roman period, in the 1st century AD, and consists of three sections. The gate providing the first entry into the city from the outside is connected to the outer city wall; its western part joins the wall, while its eastern part is connected to a smaller wall. The inner gate is reached through a square courtyard.

The inner gate has been documented as built with ancient spolia, but very little evidence remains today. A travel source reports that the granite column over the gate bears a portrait of Emperor Domitian and that the Ottoman army entered the city through this gate in 1331.

Visit note: The gate is partially standing; a travel source states that it is under restoration and that not every section may be visible.
