Göl Kapı

It is the western gate of the city walls and is counted among the four monumental gates. An inscription on an architrave records that the İznik city walls were repaired during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Claudius, under the supervision of envoy Vellius Macrinus and jurist Sallius Antonius.

No trace of the gate itself remains today. Half of the tower on the right is standing, while only the foundation of the tower on the left is discernible; this section appears more as an opening created by the collapse of the city walls. The tower's outer facing is brick, and its interior is Horasan mortar and rubble stone.
