Description
İznik Eğitim ve Öğretim Vakfı was established in 1993 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Işıl Akbaygil to revive İznik tile, whose production ended approximately 400 years earlier. From 1995, the recipe was worked on through research lasting two years; the R&D center in İznik was supported by TÜBİTAK and Princeton University.
Tile production takes place in workshops in İznik, with raw materials supplied from İznik and its surrounding area. The tiles, containing 85 percent quartz, are handmade. Tiles used in buildings and household products such as plates, bowls, vases, and oil lamps are produced.
